07/03/17  Cuban National Arrested In Little Rock On I.R.S. Scam


A Cuban national suspected of personally collecting more than 1.3 million dollars in cash from 784 fraud victims across the U.S., including many in Arkansas, was detained Friday in Little Rock. According to U.S. Magistrate Judge Tom Ray, 42 year old Angel Chapotin Carillo was ordered to remain in custody of U.S. Marshalls until his trial. Ray said if he let him walk out of the courthouse he could be anywhere in the world in 24 hours.

According to an Arkansas-Democrat-Gazette report Carillo is one of seven arrested in April in south Florida after a federal grand jury in Little Rock indicted them and three others on charges related to a nationwide scheme to steal nearly 9 million dollars from unsuspecting taxpayers by impersonating I-R-S agents.

Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, in an interview on KQ-102.3's "South Arkansas Today"  warned residents of this kind of scam.

Carillo is believed to have collected 50 wire transfers over a few days time in various Arkansas towns.

The 239th traffic fatality of the year was recorded in Sebastian County on U.S

Highway 71 at Brooken Hill Drive in Ft. Smith.

According to a preliminary state police report..63 year old Janet Kessler died of

injuries suffered in a crash involving three vehicles. Kessler's 2014 Chevrolet

Cruze..eastbound on Brooken Hill Drive was hit broadside by a southbound

2006 Toyta Tacoma..the light changed and the driver of the Tacoma attempted

to stop..but not in time and struck Kessler's vechile on the drivers side..Kessler's

car then spun into a light pole and then collided with a a north bound 2015

Hyundai Sonota..who was stopped in the northbound turning lane of U.S. 71.

The drivers of the other vehicles not available in the report.

The injured were taken to a Ft. Smith hospital..where Kessler died of her

injuries. Weather conditions were clear..the roadway dry at the time of the

crash at 11:14 Thursday morning. Ft. Smith PD investigated.
