03/21/17  Football Field At Rison To Be Named After Former Player

The Cleveland County School board unanimously approved a motion at their last meeting to name the football field at Rison High School after former star football player and scholar athlete George Walker.

Walker guided the Wildcats to their first state championship in 1950 and was also a starting quarterback for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Walker was part of the 1950 Wildcats that won what would be the first of eight state championships in football for Rison High School.

After football Walker had a long career in the banking industry with Simmons First National Bank in Pine Bluff. Walker has continued to be a supporter of Rison High School Athletics and academics and until recently had attended nearly every home football game as well as several out of town games.

Stan Sadler, a school board member who spoke to Walker about the name change,  said Walker agreed but only as long as the field isn't simply called George Walker field. Sadler said an official name is still to be determined.
