Dr. Don Gene Howard died Friday morning in Hot Springs. He was 81. Dr. Howard dedicated his life to proudly serving Fordyce as a family practitioner and his country as a Brigadier General for the Arkansas Army National Guard.

Dr. Howard practiced medicine in Fordyce from 1960 until his retirement in 2005. He made many house calls and delivered over two thousand babies  throughout his career.

After retiring to Hot Springs, he continued part time practice with Arkansas Counseling and Psychodiagnostics serving the children at Hillcrest Children's Home and surrounding communities until 2013. In addition, Dr. Howard was a knowledeable military historian who began his career with ROTC while a student at the University of Arkansas. He rose from 2nd Lt to Brigadier General during his 40 years of service.

The family will receive friends today at First Baptist Church in Fordyce from 12:30pm until 2pm, the time of funeral services with Reverend John McCollum and Reverend Rusty Ross officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held at Wheeler Cemetery near Fordyce. Benton Funeral Home of Fordyce in charge of arrangements.
