05/09/16   Measles Found In Tennessee Dallas County Urged To Get Shots

The Tennessee Department of Health and the Shelby County Health Department on April 25, confirmed six cases of measles and were aware of several suspect cases. Dallas County Health Unit Administrator, Donna Ferguson, on KQ-102.3's "South Arkansas Today", urged Dallas County residents and residents all over the region to get a measles shot. Ferguson said the vaccination rate in Arkansas is not good.

Ferguson said measles are highly contagious.

Children are recommended to receive one dose of MMR vaccine at one year of age and a second dose at age 4-6. Adults born before 1957 are generally considered immune to measles. All adults born after 1957 or later should have documentation of one or more doses of MMR vaccine unless they have medical contraindication to the vaccine or lab evidence of immunity to measles.

Illness can be prevented in unvaccinated persons if vaccinated within 72 hours of exposure.
