02/29/16  Girl Scouts Close Camp Taloha In South Arkansas

The Girls Scouts have announced plans to close Camp Taloha at Pine Bluff and three other camps in Arkansas, saying they're not being used enough. The Girl Scout-Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas say it costs a half-million dollars a year to run a wilderness property, and fewer than 5 percent of its local members are attending the residential camps.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that in addition to Camp Taloha at Pine Bluff, Camp Karlton Kemp in Miller County will close after existing reservations are honored. Camp High Point near Mena and Camp Noark in Huntsville will close at the end of the summer.

The properties being closed, at least temporarily, will go through an evaluation phase to determine how they can be used to best benefit the group.
