12/08/15   Six Hampton Aldermen Missed Deadline For Re-Election

Only one of Hampton's six aldermen filed to run for re-election next year, the rest missed the deadline.

The filing deadline was in November, earlier than usual because the Legislature voted to hold next year's primaries in March rather than May. Evidently the change resulted in some candidates forgetting to file for office. But according to a Democrat-Gazette report, under article 19, Section 5 of the state constitution, the aldermen who did not file will still be able to serve.

The law states that “all officers shall continue in office after the expiration of their official terms, until their successors are elected and qualified.” Since none of the aldermen drew any opponents, they will serve until they are voted out of office.

Only one alderman, Lillie Randall filed for office.  She was appointed to fill a vacant slot and is running to keep that seat.
