08/05/15  Ouachita County Quorum Court Passes Ordinance Regulating Peddlers

The Ouachita County Quorum Court last night passed an ordinance regulating and licensing peddlers and solicitors and setting out penalties for violation of the ordinance.  Ouachita County Judge Robbie McAdoo was asked how the ordinance came about.

In order to sell door-to-door or solicit, applicants must file with the County Sheriff or County Judge a sworn application in writing on a form that will be furnished.  Several questions must be answered including filing his or her State of Arkansas tax number.  If the applicant does not have a state sales tax number, they shall have no right to obtain a license to sell in Ouachita County.

The ordinance shall not apply to non-profit civic, fraternal, or charitable organizations or their members or volunteers, such as, but not limited to Scouts, the United Way, Heart and Cancer funds and school organizations.

Anyone found in violation of the ordinance shall be punished by a fine not to exceed 25 dollars, and each day's violation shall constitute a separate offense.
