05/11/15  Bearden City Council Meets Tonight

The Bearden City Council meets tonight at 7pm at city council chambers at City Hall. One of the items on last month's agenda was whether or not to change the method in which the City Marshall is chosen, .by a vote of the people or by appointment by the City Council.

According to a Municipal League source, Bearden and Gurdon are the only municipalities in the state that elect their city Marshall's.  At present, Marshall John Ainsworth has two years on the term to which he was elected in the last election.  At the end of that term the council could vote and change the method of choosing a city marshall.  They could elect to retain Ainsworth as marshall or choose someone else.  At the present time the city marshall is not answerable to the city council.  However the city council does fund the office.
